Mr Kanapathipillai – Ghandinesan - Chen Chin Fook, Hary (Hary) Connection!
It is indeed deeply perplexing to fathom the intertwining life of the late K Ghandinesan and that of Chen Chin Fook (Hary)
Their similarities go a long way.
They were born and ‘bred’ in the great town of Raub and had their initial schooling at the famed Mahmud School. They were both very outstanding students during their heydays as proud products of Mahmud School Raub.
Both, during their professional careers helped other flagging spirits and saved a life or two, all the time flying the emblem of Raub and Mahmud School.
Mutually, they excelled in their respective roles;
One as a teacher/lawyer serving students and the public.
The other as an educator, who taught while discharging a sense of dutiful discipline. As a teacher Chin Fook’s love was the School Cadet Corp movement, which was an iconic school movement not merely in Raub but the state of Pahang. Chin Fook went on to help fellow teacher when he was elevated to the post of Schools Inspectorate, he retired as the Chief of the Schools’ Inpectorate.
Both Ghandi and Chin Fook had the students close to their hearts, wanting them to be disciplined and to make it in life.
Coming from Raub meant they had ventured into the far nooks and corners of Raub. Both have adventurously scaled going on alpinist flings of the surrounding hills and valleys of Raub. The hills, to mention one, Bukit Fraser.
The late Ghandi early ion his life was saved from a watery death by his late father, Mr K. Pillai a senior Hospital Assistant of the Raub Hospital. This occurred at Bukit Telaga fall in Raub. Ghandi was then a boy of 6 years old when Mr Pillai managed to give life to Ghandi again grabbing him from the jaws of a soggy death at the Bukit Telaga fall in Raub. This great rescue act allowed us to know and enjoy the company of amiable late Mr Ghandinesan. Many of us were blessed with his sharing, giving and helping qualities. This wonderful man had had a hand in many a life, be it his friends, relatives, students or foe. This was evident when some time during the 60s, when Ghandi and Chin Fook ventured to the Jeriau Falls at Bukit Fraser for a cool weekend dip. Jeriau Fall is situated amidst thew cool air and luxurious greenery of Frasers Hill. The surrounding is a lush endowment of nature at its best. There was good old Ghandinesan trying to put Chin Fook through threads of swimming, trying to teach Chin Fook to swim. And, Chen Fook gained in confidence.
Then Chen Fook in some foolhardy way got into trouble at the foot of the gushing falls. He faced a watery death. Chin Fook submerged sucked into the deep pool and was out of sight, ‘missing in action’.
And there came our ‘superman’ Ghandi to the rescue. He dived into the deep, where Chin Fook had disappeared and after some very heart-telling moments there Ghandi came jetting out pulling along Chin Fook by his hair and out of the watery grave.
To this day the grateful Hary, a very indebted man says, ‘Mr Pillai saved Ghandi for Ghandi to save me and give life to me.’
That was the greatness of our Ghandi; we thank Ghandi, for Chin Fook is still among us today!
